"Aye lass. I'll tell ye. Me uncle is a rat. Me father and him use to sail together. Traveling merchants they were. One day at port they came across pirates. Me uncle jumped out of the way and let the pirate run me father through with a sword. When I found out about it I decided then and there me uncle would no longer be considered me family. I ran away and joined a crew sailing about." he looked down at his bowl
"I've been here ever since." he said quietly. You sat their in shock, eyes wide and mouth open. You couldn't believe it! That didn't sound like the same man who you met at the booth earlier that day.
"I'm so sorry Ian. That's just
terrible." he waved you off.
"Don't worry about me lass, I'm a grown man and don' be needin' no babyin'." He shot you a smile and began eating. You were about to say something else when someone sat right next to you.
"Hello miss (name)! Fancy seeing you again!" It was none other then Peter. You looked over at him and smiled.
"Hey Pete. What's up?" you said. He and Ian looked at you confused by your statement.
"Well it appears the ceiling is the only thing up at the moment miss. What a silly question to ask." Peter said. You mentally face palmed.
'I forgot, they don't understand modern slang.' you thought to yourself.
"No, that's an expression where I'm from, it means 'What's new' or 'what have you been up to'." you said smiling. Peter gave you a small smile.
"So where are you from miss? He asked. Ian butted in.
"Aye, do tell lass." he said, smirking at you. You looked from Peter to Ian and back to Peter.
"I'm from out of town. A far off place you've never heard of." you replied, hoping that would suffice.
"Are ye afraid to tell us lass?" Ian asked, cocking an eyebrow. You looked at him in a serious way.
"No, but I can't tell you, for reasons that I also can't tell you." you said.
'I wonder what sort of trouble this lass has gotten into?' Ian wondered. He reached over and ruffled Peters hair.
"So squirt, how yer day been?" Ian asked, changing the subject. Peter looked displeased at his hair being messed up for the second time today.
"Its been fine. And stop messing up my hair you bully!" he said waving Ian's big hand away. Ian laughed.
"Oh, so ye don't like that do ye?" he asked, grinning the whole time.
"I think you already know the answer to that one bud." you interjected. Ian laughed again and went back to eating. Peter pouted a little. You turned on the bench and smoothed his hair out.
"Its nothing that can't be fixed hun." you said, smoothing the back of his head, he smiled at you.
"My mum use to do this to me all the time." he said looking slightly down. You stopped for a moment, Ian looked up from his bowl.
'Use to?' you thought. You took your hand away from Peter.
I didn't mean to-" Peter got up from the bench.
Its alright, really
" he said, turned and walked out of the dining area. You watched as he left.
"What was that all about?" you asked out loud.
"His ma was killed by pirates." Ian said. You turned around quickly and looked at him with wide eyes.
"What?" You couldn't think of anything else to say. Ian leaned back on the bench, resting on the wall.
"Aye. Both of his Parents use to be honorable people. But they were both killed by captain Ricardo Cruz. That's why we were at that port back there. Rumor had it that he was there on business. But now-" you cut him off
"-because of me we have to look else where." you finished his sentence. That would explain why the captain said you cost him dearly But you'd think he would be more mad at you. That part confused you. Ian saw you looked confused, he chucked a bit and stood up.
"Ye can ask the captain the details if ye like lass. I'm turning in early tonight. I'll be seeing ye bright and early in the morning, I could always sleep in your room in case ye get scared." he said with a wink. You crossed your arms.
"I think you being in my room would scare me enough." you said, he chuckled and left you alone with your thoughts.
'What's the real deal with Ian and Gibbons? Who is this captain Cruz? Did he kill Peter and Arthur's parents? Why isn't the captain mad at you!' you thought about all these questions but your stomach interrupted you with another growl. You looked down at the bowl.
'I have to eat something' you thought. You quickly shoveled the food in your mouth.
'This stuff tastes like crap! Gibbons, I'm going to have to teach you how to cook' you thought to yourself. You noticed most of the men had left with just a few still remaining. Those ones were now looking at you, almost afraid of you. You glared at them.
"Would you mind not staring at me." you said firmly. They said nothing and continued to stare at you. You decided you didn't like this, so you got up and walked over to Gibbons who was putting dishes in a big tub with water.
"You don't know how to cook do you?" you asked him, he turned around and looked at you bashfully.
"Was it really that bad lass?" he asked. You smiled and leaned against the counter. He looked down at his feet.
"I'm a merchant, not a cook." he said. You walked over to him and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Maybe I could teach you a thing or two." you said, he looked up at you and smiled.
"Aye, a woman's touch is just what our meals need." he said smiling. You let your hand drop.
"I'm only going to teach you how to do it. I don't want to be stuck in here all day, I'll go crazy." you said, crossing your arms. He laughed and motioned you to help with the dished.
"Ye wash, I rinse." he said. You followed your orders and began washing the dished. The other pirates had left a while ago so you decided it would be a good time to start asking questions.
"So Gibbons. I don't want to seem nosy but I couldn't help but notice you and Ian seem tense around each other. Why is that?" you asked placing a bowl in Gibbons tub. He stopped for a moment.
"That be a long story lass." he said rinsing the bowl. You washed another bowl.
"Well, what else have we got to do?" you said. He sighed.
"Alright lass, I'll tell ye. It was about five years ago. I could never forget that day even if I wanted to. Me brother and I were traveling by boat to different ports. Selling our goods and receiving goods in return. We had done this most of our lives. Me brother and I worked together ever since we were wee lads. As we got older he wanted to do sellin' over in the south. That area was know to have ruthless, bloodthirsty pirates. I tried to warn him against it but he wouldn't listen to me. I remember him tellin' me "Don't worry lad, I will make sure nothin' bad happens to ye. Ye be me little brother and I will always protect ye." I trusted he knew what he was doing. Yet, one fateful day. While we were in Spain doing our tradin' as normal, the port came under attack. Pirates everywhere, pillagin', lootin' and killin'. We ran. We ran as fast as we could to our ship but we were ambushed by a group of pirates. One held a sword to me throat, I didn't dare move, I was terrified. Just as the pirate was about to do me in, me brother pushed me out of the way and took the hit himself."
His hand were shaking slightly, partly out of sadness and partly out of anger and frustration. You looked at him with sad eyes and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"I held me brother in me arms lass, he died, right there in me arms. And there was nothin' I could do about it." he finished, his voice cracking, looked down so you wouldn't see him get emotional but you could tell it pained him to recap that story. You took his hand and held it tightly.
"Gibbons, I-I'm so sorry. I had no idea
.that's not at all like what Ian told me." you said looking off to the side, remembering all the nasty thing's Ian had said. Gibbons chuckled.
"I know me nephew is mad at me. He thinks I let his father die. He has been mad at me fer years. But despite it all I still love the lad." he put the bowl down.
"Which is why I am disappointed to find him, of all people, on a pirate ship. Its almost like he is mockin' his fathers death." he gripped the towel in his hand tightly, you thought if he didn't let go of it soon he would tear it to shreds. You stood there for a moment, unsure about what to say. You wanted to help him out. Family was important to you, and knowing what it was like to watch one of your own brothers die, you felt impelled to help.
"You know, I think if you tell Ian what you just told me, he would feel differently." you said looking at Gibbons with a smile. He shook his head.
"No lass, he wouldn't listen to me. He hasn't spoken to me ever since I told him about his fathers death." he turned back to the tubs.
"Ye can go on along now, I will take care of the rest tonight." You turned around to leave. As you got to the stairs you looked back at Gibbons.
"I think it would mean a lot to him if it came from you. Goodnight Gibbons." you said. He turned his head slightly.
"Goodnight lass and
thank ye" With that you left. You walked up the stairs, the wood creaking under your feet with every step. When you got to the surface you were greeted by a gently breeze, blowing your hair around. You took in the night air. It was cool and crisp. Refreshing even. You looked around to see if anyone else was up on deck. At the moment, you were the only one on deck. You smiled. After the day you had you could use a little personal time by yourself.
'But where to go?' you thought. Your eyes trailed up to the mast.
'The crows nest would be a good place' you thought. You walked over to the mast and started climbing up. You didn't realize it the first time you had climbed it earlier that day, but the mast was really high up! You hadn't noticed it before because you were in a hurry to get away from the other pirates. Its amazing what stress and adrenalin can make you miss. You kept climbing up until you made it to the top. You stood in the crows nest, looking over the ocean.
"Wow" you said to yourself "This is gorgeous!"
You sat down and leaned against one of the walls. You stuck your hands in your pocket to keep them warm. That's when your right hand brushed up against something
"My I-pod!" you exclaimed. You pulled out your I-pod and beamed with delight.
"Well, at least I don't have to go without you!" you said in a chipper voice. You popped in your headphones and hit the shuffle button. "Hero" started playing. You rested your arms on your knees and looked up. The sight was literally, breathtaking. Thousands of stars could be seen! You couldn't even begin to count them!
'This is nothing like back home!' you thought 'How can anyone take this for granted!?!'
Once you remembered to breath again you looked down at your left wrist, pulling your sleeve up to reveal your ticket home. You traced your fingers over the metal and thought about your home, your brothers, your mom, your friends. It would be a while before you could see them again. You hoped they didn't worry about you. You also hoped Alfred could come up with a good excuse to explain your absence. You smiled as you thought of all the shenanigans you and Alfred had gotten into when you were growing up. This situation you were in however had to be by far the topper. You looked up at the sky and sang along with the song playing. This song always reminded you of Alfred and his constant telling you that he was the hero and you were the damsel in distress.
"I miss home already" you said quietly to yourself. You couldn't help but wonder what was going to happen to you from now till the next full moon. You closed your eyes and tried to relax. The song ended and you decided to put away your I-pod, wanting to save as much of its power as you could. It might be the only thing stopping you from going insane. You suddenly heard a noise from below. You stood up and peered over the edge to see someone down below. You stayed as quiet as you could so whoever was down there wouldn't know you were spying on them. You faintly heard them speaking but you couldn't really heard fully what they were saying.
'Well now I can't get down until that person leaves.' You looked closer at the person 'Wait
is that the captain?'. Yes, it was.
'What is he doing down there? It looks like he's looking for something.' You wished you could hear what he was saying.
"Where is that girl?" The captain said to himself.
"I've looked everywhere and no sign of her." He took his hat off and sighed, walking over to the railing and leaning on it. He took out a picture from his coat pocket and looked at it. "Oh mother, soon. I promise, soon yours and fathers death will be revenged. I won't let you down." Arthur said.
You, of course, heard none of this, you were too high up to heard anything but slight mumbling and the wind blowing.
'Is this considered eaves dropping?
. Nah.' you thought to yourself. You waited, just sitting there, occasionally glancing back at the captain to see if he had moved. He did, but to a different location on the deck.
'That's not what I meant by moving.' you thought to yourself. Suddenly he took his sword out.
'What is this guy doing?' you thought, soon your thought was answered. He started swinging his sword in the air and lunging at no one. Dodging and jumping as if he was fighting an opponent.
'Is he fighting the air? He's pretty good.' you giggled, he stopped suddenly.
'Crap' you thought and ducked down. He apparently heard your giggle, which surprised you being that you couldn't hear him talking before.
"Is someone there?" he called out.
'What! Does this guy have sonar hearing?' you thought, but kept quiet. You heard his boots thump around on the deck, walking around, looking for something.
"(Name)? Is that you?" he called out.
"Nope!" you called back, but quickly covered your mouth, realizing that you just gave yourself away.
'Idiot! What were you thinking?!?' you mentally cursed yourself. This time you heard him chuckle.
"(Name), I know its you. None of my men sound that feminine. Now come out of your hiding place." he said. You sighed.
'Should I? Nah, I'll razz him first." you thought.
"I don't know. If you kick them hard enough they will." you said, grinning to yourself. You heard him laugh.
"Aye, that they would. But still. Come out of hiding please." he said. You peeked over the edge to see where he was. He was right under you but he wasn't looking up. You grinned. You got on your stomach and looked down, tossing your legs back and forth like a little kid.
"Up here." you said. He looked up surprised. You giggled.
"Your funny when your surprised." you remarked. He rested his hand on the hilt of his sword.
"What on earth are you doing up there, love?" He asked. You just kept smiling down at him.
"Plotting" you said, giving him an impish smirk. He smirked back.
"Plotting? Do tell, what about?" he asked, playing your game.
"If I told you then I'd have to kill you." you said, giving him a wink. He scoffed.
"You couldn't harm me love. I'm the captain of a ship. You think they just let anybody be one? No. You have to be the best of the best to be one." he said. You sat up.
"Is that so? Care to put your money where your mouth is Captain?" you said, trying to see how far you could push him. He put his hat back on.
"Come down here and I'll show you." he said, smirking at you again. You shrugged and started climbing down. You could feel him staring at you as you climbed down, rather, it was what you thought he was staring at that you didn't like.
"Hey!" you called down "quit being a perv and look away!" you said, he chuckled and turned his gaze to the side. You nodded and continued to climb down. As soon as your feet touched the deck you felt a sword at your throat and an arm around your waist. The captain leaned down to your ear and whispered.
"Got you." You just rolled your eyes.
"Oh, like I wasn't expecting that. Your so obvious" you said. He chuckled.
"And what do you plan on doing about it, love?" he said. You smirked, remembering all that your friend Yao had taught you plus those self defense classes you took.
"This" you said, elbowing him right in the gut. He grunted and the sword left your throat. You then grabbed his wrist and went behind him, pinning the sword to his neck. The only down side was that he was much taller then you, so you were facing his back, unable to whisper any witty come back in his ear.
"Gotcha!" you said in a perky voice. He chuckled.
"It would appear so but-" he quickly grabbed your wrist and spun you around so you were facing him. "-I believe you left yourself wide open." he said, smirking down at you. You looked up at him and chuckled. He looked down at you and frowned.
"What's so funny love?" he asked, confused by your reaction.
'Time to use a little feminine charm' you thought.
"Your just so handsome when your assertive." you said, batting your eyes. He looked at you in shock and embarrassment. You took this moment to twist your wrist out of his grasp and swing your leg down at his feet, causing him to fall to the ground. You picked up his sword and stood over him, pointing it at him.
"Muahaha! I win." you said, smiling down at him. He just laid there on his back, staring at you dumbfounded.
"That was a dirty trick, love" he said, you shrugged.
"Oh? Was it Mr. Captain sir?" you asked innocently, placing a finger at your mouth as if to say 'Lil' ol me? Fight dirty? Never.' He chuckled.
"You seem to know how to fight well in hand to hand combat. I'm impressed." he said. You blushed slightly by his compliment.
"Thanks" you said. Handing him back his sword and extending a hand to help him up. He took your hand.
"But your naive." he said grinning, pulling you down to the floor, sitting on top of you with his sword at your throat again. He looked down at you and continued to grin.
"Never let your guard down." he said. You looked him, straight in the eyes and gave him another impish grin.
"Who says I let my guard down?" you said, kneeing him in the butt causing him to fall forward. You rolled and were now sitting on his chest with his sword pointed at his face. He was dumbfounded again.
"Where on earth did you learn to fight like that?" he asked, his green eyes showing curiosity. You lowered the sword and tossed it to the side. You really didn't like handling sharp objects, let alone a sword.
"My friend Yao. He taught me a lot. You said, grinning triumphantly. He smiled at you.
"He taught you well. If I had known you were trained in Eastern fighting techniques I would have been more careful around you." he said. You smiled at him and hopped off his chest, extending your hand to him. He took it, but this time he didn't try anything. He simply let you help him up. He dusted off his pants and looked at you for a minute. You, not liking people staring at you piped up.
"What?" you asked. He just gave you a smile.
"I'm just curious about you. That's all. There's more then meets the eye with you I'm finding out." he said, walking over to retrieve his sword.
"I observed your little acrobatic stunts earlier today and I must say-" he looked over at you with piercing eyes
"-I was impressed then too." You shifted uncomfortably in your shoes.
'What's this guy getting at?' you thought. You were getting suspicious of this guy. First, you foil his plans to capture someone. Second, he doesn't even yell or scream at you when most people would have and three, now he's complimenting you? You broke the silence.
"Well, I'd better head on off to bed, its getting late and I need to get some sleep. I'm not a morning person. Trust me, you don't want me around when I'm on low sleep." you said, crossing your arms at the last part. He chuckled at you.
"Then I suppose I will say good night then." he said, giving you a slight bow. You cocked an eyebrow and hurried past him. You stopped at the stairs. You could tell he was eyeballing you as you walked. You turned your head around quickly. His eyes shot up at your face.
'He looked up
so he was looking at my...' you thought, starting to get mad at this. You shot him a glare. He looked away as if nothing happened. The smirk across his face, however, didn't escape your notice.
'Oh, your so going to get payback for that' you thought.
"Good night Captain perv." you called back, before descending down the stairs to your room. You walked down the hall's until you came across your room. You could hear the other pirates fast asleep. Snoring, squeaking and other bodily noises could be heard from the other room. You giggled.
"Just like my brothers" you said quietly to yourself. A frown came to your face as you thought about your brothers. You missed them all. Patrick, Matthew, Calvin and Jacob
.Jacob. You gave a sad sigh as you though about your oldest brother Jacob. Turning the knob to your room and opened the door. You noticed that it was pitch black, except for the little bit of moonlight shining in through the window.
You closed the door and adjusted your eyes to the lack of light. You took your sweatshirt off and placed it over the chest. Walking over to your bed you sat down and kicked your shoes off. Literally. Your shoes went flying across the room with a 'thud' as they hit the wall. You shrugged, you weren't really in the mood to care.
"Eh, it happens." you said to yourself. You laid down on your bed, placing your hands on your stomach. You lay there, thinking about all that had happened that day. Alfred chasing you around the house. You falling into the time machine. Meeting Gibbons. Sassing Pirates. Sassing the Captain. Learning more about Ian and Gibbons. You sighed
'Ian? That reminds me. I need to exact my revenge.' you thought grinning evilly to yourself.
'Ian and the Captain are now on my hit list.' You took a minute to think of ways of getting even with them.
You glanced out the window. You could see the moon, already waning. It just sat there in the sky, staring at your (e/c) eyes as if it were laughing at you. You gave it the stink eye. That's right! You gave the moon the good ol' stink eye.
"You think this is pretty funny don't you?" you asked it. It said nothing. Obviously, it's the moon. You would have been more disturbed if it had answered you. You turned your gaze back to the ceiling. You sighed.
"A whole month? That's a long time." you said quietly to yourself. Your right hand traveled up to your chest. You felt your necklace through your (favorite color) shirt. You reached inside your shirt and pulled it out. You held it in your hand and looked at it. It was a small, pendant sized compass. Gold trimming on the outside and a green gem in the middle. You flipped it to the back side. On the back, engraved in tiny lettering it read
"Never stop seeking (name)"
It was too dark to read it, but you had read it so many times you knew it by heart. You felt a tear slide down your cheek. Your brother Jacob had given this necklace to you before he died. You wore it all the time. It was precious to you. Like it was almost a part of you. You tucked it back into your shirt for safe keeping. You rolled over on your side and closed your eyes.
"I sure hope this is just a bad dream." you said to yourself before drifting off to sleep.
